Afterlife
Carved Panel
2015

This work was inspired by the majestic cloudscapes that appear in the illustrations of Gustav Doré, who is celebrated for his artistic interpretations of The Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost and The Bible. Clouds are featured prominently throughout these works as elements in his images of both Heaven and Hell. For Doré, clouds form part of a landscape that is native to an eternal and immortal afterlife. Afterlife is a “cloudscape” that is suggestive of the mythological eternity that awaits both the devout and the profane. Samples of Gustav Dore’s clouds have been merged together in order to form a cloudscape that is an image of a singular, eternal afterlife.
