Countdown
Video Column
2015

An opportunity to use an old collection of 16 mm films presented itself to me and I decided to remove all of the countdown leaders. Film creates the illusion of a linear progression of time by running at 24 frames a second. Upon closer examination I noticed that many of these colourful, numeric countdown sequences were actually missing frames and had been damaged and repaired many times over the decades. This caused them to play out of synch; the measure of time contained within them was disrupted. The resulting work is an abstracted column that resembles a strip of film and is steeped in the romanticism of an archaic medium that wants to be a totemic contemplation of time itself.
